Do I need a SD card to download apps on an android tablet?

I have a sylvania tablet (powered by android) and somehow the SD card slot is not reading the card (my dad took it to his job, office depot, and they said the slot was damanged. And I really want to download apps. Do you think I can install apps without an SD card? Or do I have to send in a warranty?
